Inspiration to help you find your own way

Dear Friend, It’s not surprising that many clients I work with find it really challenging to take ownership of negative situations in their lives. Since we have been toddlers, we’ve been taught basic morality -- the difference between wrong and right. So, when people “wrong” us, it is hard to let go, to not call them on it, to move on without an apology or a change in their behavior. It is really hard to see that it is not about us. Hard not to harbor negative feelings. I am not proposing that we lose our moral compass, that we tacitly condone behaviors that we do not believe serve our or humanity’s higher good, or that we simply look the other way. Instead, I am proposing that it is how we respond versus react to a situation that enables us to move forward with grace and also help move others forward, too. Accepting personal responsibility for our response to a situation does not ascribe us with blame. In fact, a non-judgmental and sacred response brings light to darkness. We can lead by example of how we participate in a situation. It is so important to understand the source of the feelings a troublesome situation elicits in us and why. There is a reason some situations more than others get to us at the core, touch a raw nerve, or strike a chord…. It is likely due to unresolved emotions from our past that keeps us stuck in a reactive pattern. Once we understand this and resolve our past, we have the power to move beyond a visceral reaction and shape a constructive and heartfelt response that helps create more favorable conditions and outcomes. Holding negative energy hurts you more than it hurts others. It holds you as victim. The way to create positive change is to hold onto positive energy through your interactions with others. That’s how you attract more positive energy to yourself and your dealings with others. Your life is an ongoing series of choices. Making choices from unresolved fear or anger chains us to the past, when instead, we all want to move forward and inspire others to move forward, as well. Mohandas Gandhi’s famous quote – “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”-- is not only applicable to big public change, but also to the millions of small interactions that we have with others day-to-day.
